Orphan Street Brandy Returns: Atelier Vie Announces The Second Release Of Barrel-Aged Louisiana Grape Brandy
January 31, 2018 – New Orleans. Innovative New Orleans distillery Atelier Vie announces the second release of a their two year old Orphan Street Brandy, the first barrel-aged Louisiana grape brandy since at least the days of Prohibition.
“Orphan Street Brandy is ongoing series of experimental brandy distillations from ‘orphan’ lots of wine,” Jedd Haas, President of Atelier Vie explained. “Each distillation has been a unique combination of varietals and vintages. It’s an interesting process in which the full results aren’t known for two years, which is the aging period. With this second release, we have achieved a notably different result,” Haas continued.
Once distilled, the new-make brandy goes into a barrel, the type of which has also varied for different batches. This second release was aged in a recently dumped bourbon barrel, and the brandy has subsequently acquired a bourbon note as part of the flavor profile.
By Federal law, brandy distilled from grapes must be aged at least two years in oak barrels in order to be legally called “brandy.” Any less than that and it must be called “immature brandy.”
“Who wants to drink immature brandy?” Haas asked.
You might wonder about the name of this spirit; but there is an explanation stemming from local geography. Scattered throughout the city of New Orleans, one finds a number of curiously short streets. Church St. in the Central Business District. Architect St. in the Bywater. Madison St., Wilkinson Row, and Clinton St., all in the French Quarter. These orphan streets seem almost like accidents, remnants out of place within the overall grid.
Likewise, remnant lots of wine come our way. These orphan bottles are put to good use and distilled into brandy. Orphan Street Brandy reflects this heritage; one of accidental journeys, leftover scraps of geography, and fortuitous crossings. The label contains references to this origin, with typography and design inspired by the street signs of the French Quarter, antique iron work, and the symbol of New Orleans, the fleur-de-lis.
Orphan Street Brandy is bottled at 80 proof (40% Alc./Vol.) in 200ml flasks. Available only at the distillery, the flasks sell for $20 each. Quantities are limited.
Visiting Hours at the Distillery
The distillery is open for tastings and discussion of the distillation process every weekend from 10-2 on both Saturday and Sunday. There is no charge to visit the distillery and the company’s full line of spirits is available for retail purchase during these weekend hours. Visitors should see the company web site for directions and additional details.
Atelier Vie’s Spirits
In addition to Orphan Street Brandy, Atelier Vie distills Euphrosine Gin #9, a flavorful American gin; and also distills a barrel-aged version of Euphrosine, called Barrel-Finished Reserve, which is aged in American whiskey barrels. The Atelier Vie line-up also includes Toulouse Green, Absinthe Verte, a traditional-style absinthe based in part on French recipes from the 1800s and distilled with Louisiana wormwood; and Toulouse Red, Absinthe Rouge, a “new school” American absinthe colored red with hibiscus and excellent for cocktail mixing. Atelier Vie also sells Buck 25 Vodka; an overproof cane vodka designed for creative mixologists to craft their own spirits flavors through rapid infusion.

Euphrosine & Bucha? Instant Pimm’s Cup!
Sometimes, all you need to do is walk down the street to have a meeting of the minds and a great idea. During a visit with our friends at Big Easy Bucha, former bartender Austin added our Euphrosine Gin #9 to Big Easy Bucha’s Geaux Green for an impromptu cocktail.
The combination of greens and cucumber in Geaux Green and the balanced medley of flavors in Euphrosine Gin #9 turned out to be both easy to mix and incredibly delicious!
Ingredients:
1 part Euphrosine Gin #9
2-3 parts Big Easy Bucha Geaux Green
Method:
Combine in a glass on the rocks. A lemon twist might well enhance it further.

More Creative Cocktails With Euphrosine Gin #9
Creative mixologists across the state are inspired by Euphrosine Gin #9 to create new cocktails and new variations on old classics. Our latest roundup of compelling Euphrosine gin cocktails includes the Window Box, the Limey Bastard, and the Havana Aviation.
In Shreveport, a classic cocktail gets a new Euphrosine twist with the Havana Aviation at Havana Sports and Cigar Bar in the Highlands neighborhood.

In Baton Rouge, Matt Vondenstein at Driftwood Cask & Barrel has mixed up The Limey Bastard, a compelling concoction that Vondenstein describes as “pretty much a Mojito but with gin.”
The Bastard came about because “we decided to twist a drink that everyone already drinks and I think it’s delicious,” Vondenstein added. “We figured we would give an ode to all those British sailors that had to endure long voyages. Back in the day it was mainly rum that they drank. But a little known fact is that sailors put limes in their barrels to keep them from spoiling. Then they added mint to settle their stomachs. So yeah. Here is the Limey Bastard.”
Indeed, here it is! Photo courtesy of Driftwood Cask & Barrel, Bastard in front, Matt Vondenstein in the back.
Meanwhile in New Orleans, noted mixologist Lu Brow created the very popular Window Box cocktail at DTB. A delicate herbal creation featuring fresh thyme, cucumber and egg white, the Window Box has since been succeeded by the a new Euphrosine cocktail called the #9 Collins on the DTB menu. (But you can probably still ask for the Window Box and get it.)

Toulouse Red Absinthe Snowball Kicks Off Cocktail Celebration at Southern Food & Beverage Museum
During these scorching days of summer, cooling refreshment is much desired. So it was most fitting that the “welcome punch” for the American Independents competition at the Southern Food & Beverage Museum was a snowball. An absinthe snowball, to be precise.
The Toulouse Red Absinthe Snowball was created by noted bartender Star Hodgson, pictured above with a bottle of Toulouse Red and the cocktail, with assistance from visiting bartender Jonathan Pogash, The Cocktail Guru. Jonathan is shown at right, busily mixing another round.
The hibiscus note in Toulouse Red that adds both color and flavor was taken to another level by another key ingredient: a hibiscus syrup amaro, blended by Star. An inspired and stimulating combination!

Summertime Cocktail Research: Barrel-Aged Gin Infusion & Laranjinha Cocktail
A few weeks back, while visiting a local barbecue joint, the manager asked if we could help develop a cocktail that would be complementary to their barbecue. Never one to shy away from a challenge, we took the matter in hand with some initial ideas from our discussion.
We had discussed the great affinity of Euphrosine Gin #9 Barrel-Finished Reserve and ginger; one go-to cocktail we have enjoyed a number of times is a mix of equal parts Barrel-Finished Reserve and ginger beer, along with a squeeze of lemon, on the rocks. With this tasty combination as an initial inspiration, we prepared an infusion of Barrel-Finished Reserve with ginger and a seasonal ingredient.
When thinking of barbecue, one complementary idea is to use a flavor unlike the main course. With this idea in mind, and the summertime upon us, peaches came to mind. So it came to pass that we infused a peach, some ginger, and a bottle of Barrel-Finished Reserve.
The result was spicy with a ginger kick and the peach in the background. A future variation might change the recipe to two or three peaches, plus the ginger. A barbecue aficionado might even put the peaches in the pit for some char and smoke as well.
Peach-Ginger Barrel-Finished Reserve Infusion
Ingredients:
1 bottle Euphrosine Gin #9 Barrel-Finished Reserve
25 grams ginger, peeled and cut into medium dice
1 peach, cut into large chunks (discard the pits, leave skin on)
Method:
Add all ingredients to a mason jar and infuse for 1 week, or to taste. After infusion is complete, drain the liquid through a strainer and back into the bottle. Add a label to the bottle to identify properly.
Now that you have this base ingredient, it’s time to make cocktails!
After a few false starts and interesting experiments, inspiration struck.
Laranjinha Cocktail
Ingredients:
2 ounces Barrel-Finished Reserve infusion
Juice of one small orange
1/2 ounce Amaro (dealer’s choice)
Method:
Add ice to a rocks glass; add all ingredients and stir gently.
(The name Laranjinha means “orange” in Portuguese)
